in the dark teeming forest
cicadas serenade fire flies
cicada rhythms, cicada secrets encoded
cicada secret messages
send fire flies out to do darwin's work
of their own free darwin will

fire flies surprise the void
blinking streaming instant lore
over back porches, summer lovers and pure night
fire flies dance and dart
dancing on and off to cicadas' crazy rhythms

what do the secret sounds mean ?
throbbing in the night
powerful mysterious dna silence
you can hear them all at once

the fire fly light
quicker than cicada rhythm
leaves no track or echo
in the tall pines, in the tall oaks
you can't see them all at once

a few fire flies are detained
in children's jars
under innocent observation
a few fire flies
surrender bioluminescent truths
cupped deep in small hands

the cicadas in the tall trees bear witness
add the children's newly buzzed dna
to their rhythms for darwin's next wave

what do these night lights mean ?
soft strobes in the night
powerful mysterious dna radiance
you can't see them all at once

pitched rhythms
echo in the tall trees
who whispers to the cicadas ?
you can hear them all at once

every summer fire flies
learn these secrets
blink and disappear
early, too early
while it's still warm
